Pine
Grove, Calif. – 17 year-old Matt Scott spent just six feature
events in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Western Late
Models before claiming his stunning
first career win, Saturday night at All American Speedway in
Roseville, Calif.
With the win, the 17 year-old moves into first in the
California NASCAR Rookie of the Year chase, and into second in
the national standings.
“I don’t even know how to explain it,” Scott said when trying
to describe his emotions. “I was sick this morning. My mom
didn’t want us to come tonight. I definitely wasn’t expecting
this.”
Scott
started out the afternoon on the three tenths of a mile
asphalt oval by setting a new track record with a 13.786.
In the
first of two 44 lap features on the evening, Scott finished in
the third position after starting fifth in the 18 car field.
But in
the nightcap, Scott meticulously moved forward from fifth on
the grid to the leaders.
By lap
30, Scott was challenging the veteran John Moore. Heading into
turn three on lap 34, Scott made the pass for the lead.
“I was slowly reeling him in,” Scott said. “I was just waiting
for an opportunity to make a move.”
Scott
kept his cool through heavy lapped traffic and came home with
the popular feature win. He was greeted by a rousing response
from the fans and a throng of fans in the pit area.
Scott is
currently slated to run all Westcar Late Model Series
co-sanctioned events at All American
Speedway
and is looking for sponsorship to be able to run the entire
2009 schedule. He is ranked fourth in Westcar points, sixth in
All American Speedway points, and continues to climb in the
national and state rankings.
