Grove,

– 17
year-old Matt Scott earned his fourth and arguably biggest
Western Late Model win of his career Sunday, winning the 100
lap “All American Open Showdown No. 2” at All American
Speedway in Roseville, Calif.
Scott,
driving the #35 Go Girl Chevrolet, hauled in the $3000 first
place prize after assuming the lead for good on lap 94 and
holding off Jason Fensler to the finish.
Scott also
rose over $300 for cancer research in honor breast cancer
awareness month.
“This
weekend we didn’t have a really good car, maybe a top-five
car,” Scott said. “My Dad, Rich, and the team did a great job
and we accomplished a win. This is probably the best win of my
career.”
The weekend
started off Friday with Scott running solid 14.1 second laps
around the one-third mile asphalt oval in practice.
On
Saturday, Scott timed in with a fifth fastest effort of 14.050
seconds to give him a fifth starting position in the 25 lap
qualifying race.
After
passing for fifth on lap 11, he was passed by Bobby Butler on
lap 14. The sixth place finish put Scott second on the grid
for the 100 lap feature on Sunday.
A busy
start saw Scott shuffled back to sixth place by lap seven.
Scott moved into fourth on a lap 32 restart, but fell back
into fifth a few laps later.
Running a
conservative race, Scott held back until around lap 65 before
making his charge. Scott passed Chad Holman for third on lap
70 putting him in position to challenge for the win.
Scott
passed Fensler for second on lap 80 to setup a run at race
leader Eric Schmidt.
On the lap
83 restart, Scott charged to the outside in turn two and took
the lead down the backstretch. A restart just two laps later
saw Scott loose the lead to Bobby Butler.
With the
laps winding down, Scott stayed glued to the back of Butler.
Going into turn one on lap 93, Scott took the lead from
Butler.
A
fast-moving Fensler came up on the back bumper of Scott for
the shootout to the finish. Coming into turn three on the
final lap, Fensler and Scott made contact. With the fans on
their feet, Scott gathered the car up to beat Fensler to the
finish by a nose.
“That was a
really tough battle,” Scott said. “He gave me a little rub and
it was a great race.”
