"FAST FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH" ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND
9/3/2010
Here is our weekly look at the five drivers that
RACELINE thinks are the ones to watch over the
weekend.
Keith Bloom, Jr.
– Keith Bloom is one of the few drivers right now
in Northern California with a career path focused
on non-wing dirt Sprint Cars. After winning the
Placerville / Silver Dollar Spec Sprint
championship in 2008, at age 15, Bloom has gone on
to race non-wing USAC National Sprints throughout
the last two summers in Indiana. Bloom will have
a lot of fast company this Saturday and Sunday for
the USAC/CRA Louie Vermeil Classic at Calistoga
Speedway, but should be a contender and exciting
to watch.
Jacob Gomes –
There’s lots of intriguing stories this weekend at
TOYOTA Speedway for the SRL SPEARS Southwest Tour
“NTS, Inc. 100” but Jacob Gomes tops the list.
Admist a record entry list of 35 cars that
includes Bobby Hodges making his series debut,
veteran Dan Holtz returning after a long absence,
and SP Racing pilot Kyle Cattanach who is
definitely in the championship hunt, Gomes has the
momentum on his side. While the SRL cars have
been idle since July 17, Gomes has been busy
racing. Gomes finished second to NASCAR West
Series champ Mike David in the “Race for Autism”
at Stockton and followed that up last week by a
win and a second in the twin 44s at Roseville.
After finishing fourth in the last SRL race at
TOYOTA Speedway, Gomes proved he can hang with the
veterans.
Bobby Hogge, IV –
Bobby Hogge, IV swept the West Coast Modified
Nationals last weekend at Antioch and Merced
Speedways, making him an easy favorite for
Sunday’s Simpkins Memorial for dirt Late Models at
Santa Maria Speedway. Hogge is one of the
drivers in the dirt stock car world that you can
always count on to be a front-runner and winning
the $2,000 race at Santa Maria this Sunday would
be a nice feather in the cap for the veteran.
Zane Lovelace, Jr. –
We could name this fast-five selection “the whole
field at Stockton 99 Speedway” because for this
first time this season for a major NASCAR Late
Model event, Manteca’s Jacob Gomes will be
absent. Gomes, who won both the holiday races at
Stockton so far this season, will be busy with the
SRL SPEARS Southwest Tour race at TOYOTA Speedway
in Irwindale, Calif. Lovelace, Gomes teammate out
of the Joiner Motorsports stable, has been a
consistent front-runner on Stockton’s
quarter-mile. Other drivers to watch on Saturday
night include rookie points leader Chad Holman and
Lodi’s Michael Wendt.
Chris Scribner –
Loomis’ Chris Scribner has made a big impact
lately at All American Speedway in its
NASCAR-sanctioned Late Model division. After
picking up crew chief Tim Gillett, Scribner has
chipped away in the points and has quietly put
himself in position to take over second or third
before the season is over. After finishes of
fourth and sixth last weekend in the twin 44s,
Scribner will face another large field in Saturday
night’s TOYOTA/TRD 100. |
