"FAST FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH" ON THE
SEPTEMBER 11 WEEKEND
9/10/2010
Here is our weekly look at the five drivers that
RACELINE thinks are the ones to watch over the
weekend.
Ron Chunn
– After a season that admittedly has fallen short
of his expectations, due to many mechanical
problems, Ron Chunn seems to have finally sorted
the C&H Racing #44 Late Model at All American
Speedway. His last three starts have yielded
fourth, fifth, and sixth place runs which have him
firmly in the points battle for fifth place with
Juan Pitta. Chunn leads Pitta by seven points
going into Saturday’s Twin 44s.
Chris Lambert
– Loomis, Calif.’s Chris Lambert is the points
leader at All American
Speedway
in the Street Stock division. But what makes his
season even more remarkable is his second place
standing in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
Division III national title. Lambert is one of
many All American Speedway racers in both division
II (Modifieds) and Division III that are ranked in
the top-50 in the nation. Lambert, with a crate
engine, has held off the powerful open motor of
Mickey Owens all season long and can win his
second straight division title this Saturday.
Bobby Runyan, Jr.
– Saturday’s Ford Focus Midget twin feature at
Stockton 99 Speedway will be a crucial night for
17 year-old who is trying to chase down Cody
Gerhardt for both the Western Pavement and overall
Western Ford Focus titles. Runyan has had a
string of bad luck in the NorCal division races,
but won at Stockton back on April 17. A big run
will give Runyan momentum going into the three
SoCal races in November.
Moses Smith
– Moses Smith of Arizona, driving for Bill
McAnally Racing, has put himself in the
championship discussion in the NASCAR K&N Pro
Series, West. Fifth in the standings on the
strength of a strong short track program, the
former Formula Mazda racer has 15th and
9th place finishes this year on the
road courses. This weekend the series goes to
Miller
Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT. The track is one
of the fastest road courses in the country and
Smith finished fifth there in 2009. If the
leaders falter, Smith could become a championship
contender.
Brad Sweet
– Grass Valley’s Brad Sweet, racing for Kasey
Kahne, has to be one of the early favorites for
the Gold Cup Race of Champions. Sweet came back
to California in June to win the WTF Cup at
Placerville Speedway and knows his way around the
California bullrings. Sweet got his Gold Cup week
off to a great start on Thursday night with a
third place finish in the preliminary feature over
a field of 52 cars. |
