"FAST FIVE
DRIVERS TO WATCH" ON AUGUST 21 WEEKEND
8/20/2010
Here is our weekly look at the five drivers that
RACELINE thinks are the ones to watch over the
weekend.
Davey Hamilton –
Davey Hamilton is not from
California
but he is a huge part of the California racing
scene. An Indycar veteran, Hamilton competes on a
part-time basis in the USAC Western Sprint Car
Series when he’s not busy announcing the IZOD
Indycar Series for IMS Radio. This weekend he
will do both as he races in the #50 Metal Works
car on Saturday night at Roseville and announces
the Indycars on Sunday at
Sonoma.
Hamilton will try to be the next driver to put the
$14,000 Schwake spec engine into USAC victory
lane.
J.R. Hildebrand
- J.R. Hildebrand is not a typical driver for us
to list on the Fast Five, but Hildebrand is
competing in his most important race of his career
this weekend at Infineon Raceway in
Sonoma.
Sausalito, Calif.’s
Hildebrand, the 2008 Firestone Indy Lights
champion, is racing in the IZOD Indycar Series for
Dreyer and Reinbold Racing in the Indy Grand Prix
of Sonoma. Hildebrand is still searching for a
full-time effort in the series and a strong run on
Sunday should give him that opportunity. In a
series that desperately needs more American
drivers, Hildebrand could be the future face of
the entire division.
Chad
Holman –
This weekend could be a huge turning point for
Stockton 99 Speedway points leader Chad Holman.
Holman, in his first full-season in the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series Late Models, is second
in the national Rookie of the Year standings and
also seventh in the state of California. With
this weekend’s Race for Autism expected to bring a
large car count to Stockton, Holman has a chance
to put himself in the State Championship picture.
Holman also can expect nice car counts for the
upcoming Labor Day weekend race and the season
finale on September 18th.
Kyle Larson
– Yes, we’ve had Kyle Larson on the Fast Five once
this season, but this weekend could be a career
defining one for the 18 year-old out of Elk
Grove. Tonight he will race in the Ocean Sprints
points race but his main focus is on Saturday’s
Golden State Challenge Series finale at
Placerville. Larson could become the youngest champion in series
history and the television cameras will be rolling
as well. Not only would Larson be making
California
history, the race is likely to be broadcast
sometime this fall to fans across the nation.
Garett Peterson –
The USAC Ford Focus Midget Series has been
extremely competitive in 2010, boosted by a large
number of Ron Sutton drivers, the new NorCal and
SoCal regional formats, and several well-funded
drivers chasing the full dirt and asphalt Western
title. But in the midst of the influx of new
money and talent, the veteran Garrett Peterson has
quietly led the NorCal points standings. Peterson
has raced in the Ford Focus division since 2005
against some of the toughest fields in series
history. This years field is tough, but Peterson
has been consistent and will look for another
feature win this Saturday night at
Roseville. |
